My recent post about some fabulous bow ties got me thinking, how hard could it be to make one myself? It probably also had something to do with the fact that I received a beautiful vintage sewing machine as a gift this past Christmas and I was eager to make something... Mind you, I've never sewn a thing in my life! Here's is the machine that makes my new hobby possible [like I need another one of those!]:

So I ended up getting a pattern and all that jazz but I turned out to be useless because I insisted on making a self tie bow tie. If you don't already know this about me, I really enjoy bow ties and I strongly prefer one's that I can tie myself. Clip on's are just not sexy. So, I made my own pattern by tracing one of my favorite bows and adding a 1/4 inch all around for some sewing slack:
BTW, if you're looking for a step-by-step on how to make a bow tie, this isn't it. Perhaps in the future, when I perfect my skill, that will be something I can work toward. For now, since I couldn't find the perfect denim bow tie, I just decided to make it! I had my dear friend Kari on-hand to consult since she has some hands-on sewing experience.
Like most things, you sew inside out and turn it the right way after it's sewn. However, since the actual neck of the tie is super thin, it's not exactly easy to do that. After some struggle, I got mine to work, but there must be an easier way. Sewing pros, if you know what I'm talking about, please help!
And so, voila, my first self-made bow tie:
My amateur skills are slowly getting better and so, I look forward to making many more bow ties for myself [and perhaps for some of my friends] in the near future!

If you decide that you hate sewing, I'll take that machine off your hands. That's just the kind of friend that I am.

What a great friend you are, Ana Maria. If ever you decide that London is just not for you, I'd be willing to switch places with you. That's just the kind of sacrifices I make for friends... ;)
