Over the years, it feels like I've tried every possible hair product for men looking for the one that would do exactly what I want: add a slight hit of volume, hold it in place but also allow it to have some overall movement. Additionally, no one likes a greasy head but I think that goes without saying.
So, if you happen to have really straight thick hair like mine, I'm happy to report that I've found two products that make me very happy. The first is a pliable molding cream by d:fi:
I've been using d:fi for a few years now. If you have a textured haircut, this product will add some life to that texture. Perfect for the "my hair looks great without trying" look. This paste is magical but, like most great things, a little goes a long way! Too much can get too sticky. Apply with care.
The other product came to me just a couple of months back and I haven't been able to stop using it since! In early March, I dropped in on the Two Point Oh! LA gang while they were shooting the Two Point Oh! LA Spring 2011 Lookbook at the California Market Center. Nick Chavez was one of the sponsors and lucky me walked away with some his Soft Flocker styling cream:
This gentle cream is superb. Less of a hold than the one by d:fi, but that's a good thing for me! Keeps my hair in place but, if the wind blows in the right direction, there's movement! How versatile! Another great thing is that it adds a hint of shine without looking greasy and unwashed. As with d:fi, and most styling creams, apply lightly.
So, if I had to recommend any two products for men's hair styling, these would be it! Ladies, if you're reading this, both these products make great selfish gifts for the men in your lives! Now, if I can only figure out how to keep the hair on my head longer, that would be great!
